"Flirty, Fun and Fancy Free"

We won't even discuss how I got on the e-mail list for Coach Leatherware, but this "flirty, fun and fancy free" ad for its new handbag collection appeared in my inbox.

Uh ... what's up with homegirl in the tiara? And is that a purse or a laptop bag? Were these images supposed to make me want a handbag? Riiiiiigggggghhhhttttt.

Aside from the fact that opening the e-mail made me want to hurl, the ad did make me wonder ... why do some women carry handbags that could double as luggage? And further, how did so many women (myself included) start carrying handbags in the first place?

Found an interesting (yet brief) 2005 article from The San Diego Union-Tribune on the subject and a 2006 Newsweek blurb on the topic.

Soooo ... okay, maybe. Now can somebody tell me why some of us are still carrying the doggone things?

What Democratic Primary Sexism?

Oh!!! You mean the sexism directed at Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton earlier this year when she was trying to clench the Democratic nomination for President of the United States? Oh. Yes. Yes. Yes. I almost forgot. "Iron my shirt!"

Well, the presumptive Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama addressed that very issue when he met with a group of women leaders today.

It's good that everyone is talking about it now, you know, since the primary season is over.
